Saving money and investing is a very important component to one’s life. It doesn’t matter if you were born into a rich family or you made your first million in your twenties – without consideration as to where your money goes, it could all end in tears. Let us take a look together, at the best ways to invest money and manage finances.

We all have the capabilities of making good money, but we are not born with the knowledge of how to invest that money and save it from slipping through the fingers. There is no doubt about it, that the world we live in is very unpredictable in terms of finance. The only way to stay on par or exceed the ever changing financial situation, we must learn to invest. If you can hold off from buying the best of everything now, the money saved could serve you very well in the future – when you retire and cease to earn through employment.

There is no need to be eradicable about investing, take your time to understand ways to invest and the options available to you and have your head screwed on. First, you have to learn to budget and take account on what you are earning and where you spend your money. There are some things in life we just can’t do without – water, food, shelter, clothing etc – these things should have most importance in your budgeting. After you have looked at all your outgoings, you should have something left to invest. This money will not directly affect your current needs or living standards and you should never leave yourself short on life’s essentials.

One of the most secure ways to invest money is through your bank, who will give interest rates on the money you deposit with them on a monthly basis. You can usually expect around 2-3% interest rate on your banked money.

Banks have a second investment strategy too, in the form of bonds. Some private organizations also offer bonds to their customers as ways to invest in the company. Most bonds will pay out after four years of investment, with interest rates of around 7%. With that in mind, it would not be the most feasible method for anyone who needs short term investment or access to their money before the four year period.

The Stock market is another potentially good way of investing your hard-earned money. You will be investing in a business on the stock market and your returns will depend on the time in which you sell your stocks. For example, if the stocks you purchased were $3 a piece and due to the business’ success they raised to $6, selling at this point would mean you earned double the money you invested. It could also turn out that the company you invested in didn’t see a significant rise in their stocks or they even plummeted. There is a small risk factor and so it is always a good idea to start gradual until you feel confident in your knowledge and understanding. Sometimes seeking advice from a stock broker is a beneficial is you are looking for ways to invest, particularly for first-timers.

I had never heard about the envelope system, but apparently it’s been around for decades. I was more than willing to learn because I realized it was critical that I learn how to budget and to understand the importance of personal finance. Here is how the envelope budgeting system works.

How System Works?

You have to sit down and figure out your exact income. This is net income, not the gross income, so you know exactly what you have available to spend for the month. Then make a list of all your monthly bills. Take envelopes and write the name of the monthly bill on the front and how much you need to put toward that bill from each paycheck. For example, your grocery spending for one month is $400. You get paid every week or four times per month. Take $100 cash every week from your paycheck and put it in the grocery envelope. When the money is gone from the envelope, you are done buying groceries for the week.

Another Example

Here is another example of how to use the envelope budget for periodic expenditures, in other words, spending that may not be on a normal basis. A good example of a periodic expense is car maintenance. You may go months without having a car repair, and suddenly you have $250 dollar repair bill. The way to plan for this is to determine how much you spend a year in car repairs. Divide that amount by 12. This is the amount you should budget for on a monthly basis to ensure that you are saving for car repairs.

Why you should learn how to budget?

One of the main reasons you should learn how to budget with the envelope system is because it will get you working on a cash basis. I know that seems odd in this day and age, what with all the electronic transactions going on around the world at the rate of millions per second. However, you will find that when you have the cash right in front of you, you will know exactly what you have left to spend. No more guessing or estimating, because that is when you can really run into problems.

Once I learned and implemented how to budget with the envelope system, my money troubles went away. Did I suddenly become rich? Of course not, but I was able to have money for all my bills every month with no more stress. It really is amazing how much you can save when you are using a budgeting system.

You don’t need any fancy PC or Mac personal finance software. I guarantee that if you are in financial difficulty, you will soon be able to set things right if you learn how to budget with an envelope system. Once you get your budgeting system learned and working well, you should considering learning how to invest as well.

Sometimes it is really hard for people to understand the importance of personal finance. Maybe it’s not taught well enough in schools or maybe people are no longer raised to understand the value of a dollar, but the subject of personal finance including how to budget is often not at the top of a person’s priority list. I know it sounds crazy, but think about it. In my own experience I have found that understanding the importance of personal finance and acting on it enabled me to get control of other areas in my life.

#2 – Saving for emergencies

How many times has an unexpected event come up that you were not prepared for financially, it may be a large car repair, hospitalization, loss of a job, etc. No matter what the event was, I’m sure you can remember how stressful it was because you were not prepared financially. Once you begin getting your finances in order, you can save for emergencies, in fact you can even learn how to invest. You no longer have to live paycheck to paycheck and you don’t have to fear a crisis because you will be ready.

#3 – Saving for retirement

My parents have a great retirement life. I contribute this to the fact that they have always understood the importance of personal finance. They never had a car payment, paid off their house as quickly as they could and lived without debt. They didn’t have fancy PC or Mac personal finance software. But they did make good personal financial decisions so they were able to retire early, buy a home in a warmer climate and really enjoy themselves. They also have excellent health to enjoy their retirement, probably because they don’t have to stress about money!

#4 – Saving for college

When you handle your finances in a responsible manner you will be able to save for the education of your children. If you are not making good decisions financially and are over spending in every area of your budget, you won’t be able to save for the education of your children. It’s as simple as that. Many people start a college savings fund as soon as their children are born and add to it automatically every paycheck. This is a great way to make sure you have saved for you child’s education.
